How long does hip replacement recovery take?
Hip Replacement is a safe and successful operation. Using the latest enhanced recovery techniques patients return to activity quickly. Hospital stay is normally 2-3 days. At the time of discharge from hospital you can independently get on and off the bed, walk with crutches and do a flight of stairs.
Crutches are usually dispensed with by 2 weeks and longer walks are encouraged. Return to driving is at 6 weeks and to full activities including tennis and golf at 3 months post surgery.
Rehabilitation & recovery
Rehabilitation is important after a hip replacement. Specialist physiotherapists look after you in hospital after your operation and get you fit and safe for going home. Outpatient physiotherapy and hydrotherapy are available after discharge. The first session occurs 10 days after surgery when the clips in the wound are removed.
